Long Beach Island, NJ - 12th July, 2021 - The Lighthouse International Film Society is proud to announce the launch of Darkhouse, a new genre festival that will serve as a doppelganger to the long-running Lighthouse International Film Festival that takes place in June each year. Darkhouse will specialize in horror, sci-fi, action, fantasy, comedy and otherwise fantastic and outrageous films from around the world. The first edition of the film festival will take place from November 11-14, 2021 and (like Lighthouse) will take place on Long Beach Island, a few feet from the beach in New Jersey—and appropriately in LBI's more eerie, off-season...

Leading the Darkhousefestival team will be Amir Bogen, Charlie Prince, Christine Rooney, Natalie Caricato and Ryan Guiterman. Amir Bogen is a film journalist and cinema studies professor as well as the Executive Director of Lighthouse, who among other things is writing his doctorate in film theory on the politics of sci-fi, space opera and superhero movies. Charlie Prince is the founder, board chair and creative director of Lighthouse, and was formerly the founder and executive director of the Friars Club Comedy Film Festival from 2009 to 2013. He recently produced ULTRASOUND, a mind-bending thriller starring Vincent Kartheiser that premiered at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival. He was also an associate producer on CRAZY WORLD, a Wakaliwood martial arts comedy that was the closing night film of the midnight madness section at the Toronto Film Festival in 2019. Christine Rooney is the Managing Director of Lighthouse, a role she has served for nearly all 13 years of the festival. Natalie Caricato is a film programmer and the chair of the year-round Lighthouse International Film Society. Ryan Guiterman is a filmmaker who recently directed CANVAS, which had its world premiere in June at this year's Lighthouse film festival.

"All of us on the programming team are fanatical about genre films, which have featured prominently at the Lighthouse festival over the years," said Charlie Prince. "We have long wanted to build a separate, dedicated genre festival to give us room to program more of the horror, sci-fi and fantastical films that we adore, and we love the idea of Darkhouse as an annual genre and fantastic fest in November that will play the evil twin to our annual Lighthouse festival in June each year."

Darkhouse screenings will take place in an infamously haunted fisherman's church that was built in 1882 and today is part of the Long Beach Island Historical Museum, a long-standing partner of Lighthouse that features prominently in many ghost tours in the region.

Darkhouse will include features, short films, and episodic content, building on over 13 years of programming similarly phantasmagoric, horrific and otherwise fantastic content at Lighthouse (albeit in a more limited capacity). A few examples of fantastic past films that have played at Lighthouse include:

The Lighthouse Film Festival began in 2009 and each year in June on beautiful Long Beach Island, New Jersey, where it welcomes filmmakers in person from around the world as it screens hundreds of important independent films, including world premieres and some of the most exciting recent films from Sundance, Cannes, Toronto, SXSW and other leading film festivals. Lighthouse is very proud to have been repeatedly named one of the 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by Moviemaker Magazine, including in its most recent ranking. In 2020, Lighthousemade headlines across the industry, including in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter for being one of the first festivals in the world to conduct an entirely in-person but socially-distanced, drive-in film festival featuring in-person premieres of over 30 extraordinary independent feature films. In addition to the annual film festival, the Lighthouse Film Society provides screenings year-round as part of its monthly film series for Lighthouse Film Society Members. Lighthouse is also proud to host its annual Write by the Beach retreat program for female screenwriters, which began in 2015.
